It's a given that keeping your customers happy is essential for a thriving business, but employees matter too. In fact, research shows that failing to challenge your workforce in the right way can cause them to look elsewhere for a job. So how can you stem the tide?

Forget about being a business owner or a manager for a moment and think back to when you first started working. What were you looking for in a job? If you’re like the rest of us, you wanted something that challenged you, kept you interested, and ensured you were financially comfortable. Now spin this analogy around and apply it to your current staff: are each of them reaching each of these goals in their roles?  And if not, how can you prevent employee stagnation… and the inevitable migration?

Why stagnation at work happens

No matter how much an employee loves their job, there can come a time when things that were once fun and challenging become run of the mill. When this happens, employees are at risk of becoming bored, complacent, and less productive. Like standing water with no current, this is stagnation in action – and left unchecked it can lead to staff leaving the company for greener pastures. In addition to a job losing its spark over time, other (and more surprising) factors can also come into play. Things as seemingly mundane as the desk someone sits at, the people they work with, and the general office culture can all have an effect.

Keeping the spark alive

Just like traditional relationships, keeping your employees happy and content is vital to ensuring they stick around. But how do you go about it? There isn’t some long-lost mystical secret to a contented workforce: it’s really all about making sure everyone feels valued. There are a number of ways to achieve this simple-yet-complex goal. Here are just a few ideas to get the creative juices flowing:

  • Carrying out regular remuneration reviews
  • Reshuffling office layouts at least once per year
  • Giving responsibility where applicable
  • Challenging employees with new roles or responsibilities
  • Holding regular team-building events

Some of these ideas may come off as a little corny or contrived, but in reality they’re valuable strategies to keep employees happy – whether the staff realise it or not.

A happy team is a productive team

With employee stagnation nipped in the bud, you should begin to see improvements across the board. If your workforce has been suffering from low morale, even the smallest of changes can make a big difference – and this filters through to all areas. Take customer relationship management, for example. Part of this can be handily managed by the trusty AutoVu CRM system, but with a motivated team, you’ll find that customers are happier to engage with your business as a whole. You might just be amazed at what a difference these tweaks can make to your business.
